I would disagree that resets are bad for the game, and also agree that 20% loss is much too steep.  There isn't anything wrong with players changing to FOTM as it just highlights that there is a serious balance problem and the developers need to make adjustments.

I would much rather see an EP cap and let players bank a certain percentage of the excess EP so they can adjust their skills accordingly.

I'm not too thrilled about the idea of microtransactions, but there are a couple of differences between Perp and EVE.

-The paint tokens are the only part that is a microtransaction.   Players still need to collect items to get the EC to get the paint.

-When your mech is destroyed so is the paint job.

IMO these two points make the microtransaction feel more within the spirit of the game.   Players still need to participate with in the game to achieve their shiny looking mech and there is a limitation to the number of mechs they can shine.

The only real disadvantage is it allows somebody to gain NIC quickly without any risk.  In a game that has a relatively large player base this isn't a problem, but I'm not sure if Perpetuum is ready for a PLEX type system just yet.
