Topic: New Player, 2 days and done

things that made me say no, find another game:

1. Costs of robots versus insurance payouts.
Learning the game takes some time to figure out what enemy NPC's are don't mess with.
Twice I was killed by simply passing too close to an area where my mission was and the targeting range of tough NPC's was overlapping, out they came. So I lost a Cassel (sp?) and then the Waspish I replaced that with. The 400k price of the waspish set me back to near nothing so I thought let's get insurance. It was quoted at $80k and payed out like 270k. (may not be exact, going on memory) Well that makes the total payout of 480k to get insured back 270k, costing me 210k if I lose the bot. Total w/o insurance 400k, not really what I would call insurance. Insurance should be available in levels based on what I pay, NOT my skills!

2. Doing missions sometimes had me on the 1 hour timer and a few to go when other much larger player(s) would zip in and start killing everything that spawned before I could even lock on. Not a good way to retain newbs. Obviously since it's a sandbox environment this is not something you would care about if it was not mission NPC's. But in a little red circle, it had to be these and so I was hosed. Really NPC's that are part of a mission should not drop a single loot if killed by someone without the mission OR if the level of player is considerably higher than the NPC.

3. As long as the game has been out I expected more than 204 people in general chat on a Sunday afternoon. Terrible player base. And generally that indicates players have been let down by slow changes, lack of end game, bugs, etc. Part of what I seen on my Waspish could be along these lines. I had near zero cargo space, yet I had 4 slots for head and 6 arms. No cargo extensions available at all? Are you kidding me? So I thought well at least I'll be able to kill stuff, I'll put 2 medium missile launchers on, and 4 small. Nope. 150 reactor per medium launcher, I can't even get 2 of them by themselves. So my 1st question was 'why the hell do I have the slots then?' I understand how skills could ultimately lower requirements etc, but by the time I trained up all that, I sure won't want to still be in that ship now would I?

4. The world is very small. Let's face it, compared to say Eve, it is but a drop in a bucket. So I began thinking what happens if they did get a huge player base? Think you have trouble doing your missions now?

That's it really, the 2 blow ups really put a nasty taste in my mouth along with the lack of players. Makes me feel the game will soon be a memory. I'm not going to spend months/years to have it vanish with my work like SWG did.

The graphics are fine. The combat mechanics are great. The fact that everytime I went to fight an NPC I had more of his buddies join up was disappointing. I'm alone, why the hell can't you find some of them alone? That contributed to the overall bad feeling I had.

I think had the insurance been more reasonable and the NPC's that are killer mobs weren't so close to newbie mobs, I'd still be playing. But having your hard work go poof like that does not add up to fun.

I hope I am wrong on the longevity issue. Time will tell.

Re: New Player, 2 days and done

Insurance covers build cost, not purchase cost. If you want cheaper robots, make some friends in trade channel or find a corporation who should always be able to sell cheaper than the open market.

Missions are getting a revamp. They'll become beacon based which means that the NPCs will spawn in small waves already tagged to you for 1 hour (Assumed because that's how artifacts currently work). Assignments are very easy to make a bit of extra NIC from but they aren't a great income. The only real reason to do assignments is for relation. It's much more effective to stay at a spawn for 20 minutes longer (The travelling time taken to get back to the terminal and back to the spawn again).

The world isn't large but it's already been doubled in size before when a lot of new players joined. As previously stated assignments are changing and they're already half way through changing the way they work.

You're correct in saying that the new player experience is poor. The low level NPCs swarm new players and without special pre-tagged spawning mechanics there isn't any you can do against older players farming better than you. It's a shame that SWG has destroyed your faith in MMOs.

This game has come a long way in a very short time and it's JUST starting to pick up again. Come the end of the week I believe there is a patch planned that should really get people back in and playing.

It would be really nice if the new player experience could be focused on but we know the old vets are out there waiting to come back but retaining new players is much harder.

Some very nice feedback here, if a little negative.

Huh? Care to reveal the source of that?

I'm sorry this isn't against you, but the amount of misinformation on the forums is reaching an all-time high lately hmm

Kosiam: thank you for your feedback, we know we still have a lot of work to do in the new player experience department.

When the egg system was being developed you leaked it to a lot of people. I was told by other players whom I assume have personal connections to devs that this was in the works.

I assumed as some players know, everyone should know. Right? wink

If its wrong then sorry. I must have listened to rumours and hearsay too much. Either way I liked what I heard. I heard, from other players, that static spawns were being pushed to be removed.

@Alexadar. I'm not trying to be a GM, I just don't like to see people get ignored on here, in the game or anywhere. No one else is really helping new players or trying to explain that it gets better and that more stuff is on the way! Even the Devs aren't trying to sell their game. There is zero publicity. We don't even get blog posts about toasters. Calvin has died, gone into hiding or has tied up everyone hands so they can't talk about the game any more.
Were you going to help? No! Were you going to sit in your heavy mech all day touching yourself and demanding that your robot should be a god? Yes!

If you want me to be bitter and hateful then so be it. I rather enjoyed trying to get people to join this game.

Kosiam thank you too you wrote your opinion, I just say 1 thing these game is about teamplay (now) so what you said about alone is pain. Try find a corporation and try other level of Perpetuum!

Btw I think if there will be more acceptable, in the beginning from new players/ alone players the game will grow.

Energy to Earth!

If it's something everyone should know about, then it's on the devblog, or at least an official forumpost by a dev.
Those "insider" infos of which noone knows the exact source may or may not be true, but most of the time they are just an idea by individual devs or a wish by players, where no official decision has been made about their development.

I shall take your advice and join uniformed masses. Though you make it sound like features get argued about rather than developed. Would explain why you can't post many blogs or screenshots.

And when we do development without arguing, it's what some players call "knee-jerk reactions" wink

And don't get me wrong, you're a tremendous help on the forums and we are thankful for what you do.

You can't win Zoom. hmm
I just wish Alexadar would stop hounding me for almost everything I say. It's got to the point where I say ANYTHING he turns around and says "You're not a GM and the Devs hate you" or words to that effect. smile

Such nice players this community has.

Re: New Player, 2 days and done

1. I think insurance been nerfed due to some people abusing of it, sort of easy nerf hammer from dev, 10 people abusing the game suiciding empty bots, and now all players are punished from poor insurance loosing full fitted bots.
Would be nice to rework insurance system, maybe with some bonus if bot were fitted.
I never lost a bot so it's not a crybaby comment, just it make sense that insurance is currently broken.

2. never happened to me, but yeah unique small spawn for a mission who can be run by multiple players at the same time and a spawn who can be farmed by non-mission-runner can create some problem.
some fixed beacon you activate to pop the mobs might be a fair solution, but it should pop them at a reasonable distance.
but i would prefer an eve-like solution, or more ao-like coh-like, dynamic generation of mission area, mission ask you to go to a teleporter and then it teleport you on instancied tiny island, wish could make some epic missions even squad-only missions too.
fully-generated might be hard to build but semi-generated might output thousands of different constructed missions.
With this, you resolve the mission spawn being farmed by other players and you make missions less-repetitive.

3. Playerbase is low yeah, but didn't really decrease since 3months~, i don't fear end of the game, base game is solid, current players are "fan" and won't quit as long as devs are active.
It is normal you have difficulty to fit Med Missile on a wasp, it is made for small ones, but well-skilled player have the option to use one med weapon, it is not for beginners.

4. The World Is Not Enough yep, all players must be agree with you smile
Currently with the low playerbase it's ok, and it was 50% smaller few months ago i think.
Also it make pvp more accessible, like low sec.
But it will grow up, no worries about it, it is just not a priority actually for devs.

D: How come you don't roll on Saturday, Walter?
W: Saturday, Donny, is Shabbos, the Jewish day of rest. That means that I don't work, I don't drive a car, I don't f***ing ride in a car, I don't handle money, I don't turn on the oven, and I sure as sh*t DON'T F***ING ROLL !!
D: Sheesh.
W: Shomer shabbos! ... Shomer f***ing shabbos!

Re: New Player, 2 days and done

I should not be the one to comment much since I have been playing the game for about 3-4 weeks now maybe, but I will give you impression anyways. tongue

So far what I have gotten out of the game:

1. Market orders, the seeded items are way too expensive for new players, but if you are resorceful enough you can get around it easily. I was building my own assault bots week two of the game, I farmed my own ammo etc.

2. Missions, can be tedious but so is all PvE grinding. Payouts seem somewhat low at first but once you do a few missions you are surprised at the income you have gotten. If your mission is getting farmed, come back in a few minutes and do it again or just go to another mission, another alpha island, adaptation is key.

3. Difficulty, frankly the difficulty is somewhat higher then your average game, and it does promote teaming up even in PvE which is the best aspect of an MMO. Farming stuff can get tough because you just can't farm without taking cover or pulling back a bit. Some people find this too hard and give up on it alltogether, it gets way better with skills and gear as it does in every other game, so stick with it for a bit.

4. Population, well frankly I just haven't seen the game promoted that much and it is my impression the Devs are quite comfortable with the current population. I see people everywhere I go and it doesn't seem too overcrowded nor does it seem empty (alpha islands wise).

5. As I mentioned above I haven't been on here for a long time now, but I have noticed that devs do get involved in the forums quite a bit, they are involved in game as well. Updates and patched in the 3-4 weeks I have seen one patch and that seems to me like its being worked on and not just forgotten.

In general, the game is fun if you give it a try. I have enjoyed playing it so far and will probably continue to do so for a while still. Both devs and the existing player base seem very friendly which is always a bonus as well! smile

Re: New Player, 2 days and done

I am new player, i found it very hard to start with, lost two arkhes in as many minutes... but i persisted.

i got my arse kicked.

i came back for more.

i got my arse kicked again

i came back with some mates

we all got our *** kicked.

we got bigger bots, and came back for another go.

we got our *** kicked, and lost millions.

Now i farm veteran Mechs with my mates, and havent lost a bot for weeks( his paint is starting to get scratched YAY!!!), and i have only been playing for a month.. - not to mention i have 6mil in my hand on a regular basis.

Moral of the story:- who cares if you get your *** kicked - you presist and try and when that didn't work - you find some friends and GET THEM TO HELP YOU - thats where the fun of perpetuum really begins!

This is a Hard Game. If you haven't the balls to play it,( or haven't the coordination to realize a red dot coming towards you needs to be clicked, investigated and, oh *** lets get out of its way....) Well that is unfortunate..

My response to anyone who says this game is "Too Hard" -- GROW SOME

Because to those who work hard, rewards do come. and this is a fantastic game once you get into it.

big_smile

i do agree with the insurance though... i think you should be able to set your premium vs. payout when you purchase the insurance

/end rant

Re: New Player, 2 days and done

How are people losing these bots.. you can just turn around and head home you know tongue demobilisers don't even come into play until the star bots...
