Topic: Bring back the Trial

topic says it all.

Bring back the Trial, even if its only 7 days long.
There are so many interested people out there who want to give this game a shot, but dont want to just blindly purchase a game. Also there are a decent amount of potential customers (like me) who played it and now want to see if it is still lacking or worth buying.

According to the official Steam Statistics less than 1200 players are listed who own Perpetuum. I cant give you the exact stats but games worse than top 100 arent shown, could be way worse aswell...

Even dead old games are listed there. Offer a Trial and make a decent SALE for Perp (the few % Joke u offered at release was pathetic).

Re: Bring back the Trial

I agree, a friend from work looked it up on steam and lost interest without a trial

Although maybe keep them off beta/gamma, we don't want people using trial accounts as walking probes.

Re: Bring back the Trial

How would a trial work with Steam?
You could install a demo version via Steam but would this have to be a separate server?
If it was a separate instance just for getting a "Look and Feel" for the game that might work but would have to be managed in such a way that people don't get too comfy and is easy to transition to the full game.

Though it would prevent that, It would also prevent these peeps from being able to try out beta PvP and see what PvP ingame is like.

Have you seen any 7 day old character die or get kills on beta? If so I would love to see that killmail.

I think that post was asking for examples of actual new players trying to PvP in the first 7 days, not scout alts.

Re: Bring back the Trial

Although I initally disagreed with removing the trial, it seems the people who pay $30 bucks are more willing to invest more than a cursory glance at the game. They seem to put a few weeks in at the least. This is based directly from myself talking to at least 20-30 Steamlings. Sure the trial gives a free look but if you haven't paid and you don't understand the game its easy to say "*** this ***" and move on to something else.

So its a toss up between more exposure to more committed. I'm leaning towards no trial.

Yeah I did mean to add to that post that there probably were some, may well be some from when NeX started and a few other corps too, but its not that common, and is probably people who're a little more committed to the game, I'd agree with Kald that not allowing trial players onto beta isn't gonna ruin the trial for new players, a few will be disappointed they can't access everything, but yeah we all remember the problems trial alts on beta can cause.

I would rather have people semi-committed then let it get to the point where a corp with no desire to pvp runs around beta saying they are the best when there is less then 50 people on at a time.

Lets have some trials. Even if we only get 1 in 4 players staying from the trial, off of say min 1000 people, thats 250 solid players.

How about you all try not bringing your stupid "lol STC don't PvP" *** into every unrelated discussion and just talk about trials. tia

I played the Eve online trial back in 2008. At the first day i thought "meh...nothing for me". Then i gave it 2 days later a second shot thinking "well lets try again". At that point i would have never thought that i would play this game for more than the trial period. As a matter of fact, i play it since then. I had mates who went through the same procedure, had mates who never played it beyond the trial period. Those who got past the trial are still playing today, those who didnt dont (obviously).

Not having a trial only results in people blindly purchasing a game which seems interesting to them. Then they log in and the most of them are dissappointed and never play it again. With the trial system (almost) only those people are purchasing who enjoyed the trial, and these are the guys you want in the game, because its not likely they give up soon, since they got over the starting problems.

It is a bad concept to just try to milk the cow for a few bucks here and there, but we all know a game like this can only function and develop with a strong and active playerbase. You just wont get that without trials and without a decent sale price. Ofc 30$ are nothing compared to what you get offered; lifetime access. But first you reallly need to get the name out there via a trial, get those purchases from players who played the trial and want to take it a step further. With steam connections you get a lot of the word of mouth that such a game needs more than anything else.

Maybe a DEV could be so kind and respond to this, if we ever see a trial again in the future or not. Would be really a bummer if not. Got my whole Eve corp in the queue willing to test and possibly switch..

Re: Bring back the Trial

Just take the current "new" tutorial for a new trial, not much to add, you can only move on to the "real world" if you buy Perpetuum, otherwise you can test anything as long as you want in there.

No time or other restrictions needed, you can test everything and get a feeling for the game, and then decide if you want to buy it.

Re: Bring back the Trial

Steam only trials could be implemented after dropping the Early Acess flag.
fist, we need them to finish most of those small QoL implementations, so the new player is not scared by the lack of common sense User interface.

second, they have to make sure that trials are not again spy-troll alts, which should eventually already be covered by steams related restrictions to have only one game purchase per account, and without VM workarounds, its hard to log in with multiple of those.

Third - two weeks are to long, 1 day to is short.

*Disclaimer: This post can contain strong sarcasm or cynical remarks. keep that in mind!

Re: Bring back the Trial

I like the idea to limit the trail player to the training island until they pay for the game, but AFTER QoL changes from the devs.

Re: Bring back the Trial

BoyC already answered this in one of the Steam threads:

With the recent change away from the subscription model we also disabled free trials for the time being. This is because we expect a big traffic surge after the Steam launch. A free trial would make the load spike worse. Once we're confident the service is up and running properly we'll look into the option of a demo mode again.

This, actually, is probably the best compromise if or when Trials do return to the game. It would require beefing the tutorial island up a bit though.
