Because quite simply, we won't disband. smile

This.

The system as described actively discourages the formation of benevolent defensive alliances.  The only forms of alliance possible after this takes affect is an aggressive alliance (whose only purpose is to deny outposts to others, since they can't/don't have the manpower to hold them) or a mercenary-style defense-for-pay alliance (interesting thought, but not very reliable overall).

In both the old and the new system, if an oversized entity can dominate an area, then they can.  The mechanism may be changing, but the reality is still the same.  The problem with this new system is that it is bypassing the indepedence that an alliance allows and forcing corporations to actually merge if they want to grow.  The old phrase "Join us or die" is suddenly not only viable, but enforced by the nature of the rules. That is not the direction this game should probably go.

The difference is that in the old system, an oversized entity can dominate MANY areas at the same time - because they only have to "prove" their power once a week at most. Here, they have to prove it daily, and so they can only dominate the space they actually DOMINATE - not the space they show up in from time to time with overwhelming force.

You don't even have to have 24/7 domination of a single location to hold an outpost. You have to have 13/7 - some people are just choosing to ignore that to push their own agendas. Realistically, 8/7 would probably be good enough, since it's very unlikely that every SAP that comes up when you're not around will be captured by someone else, and it's reasonable that some of the SAPS that come up when you're not the dominant entity will still be captured by you, the outpost holder. But, again, that's not what some people are choosing to see and focus on. smile

No corporation IS forced to recruit in all time zones just to be beta competitive. Most heavily dominated islands will sit around 90-95% anyhow, because they'll get all the SAPs they're online for, and on the occasions they have no one on, they'll lose maybe 1 in 2. (Less if it's a Specimen, I'd imagine.)

The only thing an alliance feature would do right now is allow oversized entities the ability to dominate larger swaths of landscape, which I get the distinct impression is NOT the intent of this system.

Overall, it won't change a thing.

The blob corps will still have their blobs out in force, 24/7.   Small corps simply will have no better chance under the new system than they do now.

I'm not sure I agree. Even the biggest corps in the game right now can't project CONSTANT force on more than one island. That's a lot better than only requiring a corp to project force once a week at some random time.

Will a truly massive corp be able to hold its space? Yeah, I guess so - but they were able to before. The difference is that they won't be able to hold nearly so much, opening up the space for other folks.

I like it.

Also, the mechanic probably ought to turn the outpost over to whoever captured the most once 0 is hit. Otherwise the owner can ignore sap fights until the last day, have a bunch of allies show and cap it to zero and then take the next that pops while covering the gates.

That's how I'd exploit it, personally.

So you want to ignore the benefits and lose every reason to hold the outpost until the last day when it's basically worthless, count on your allies to show up and stay there for an unknown period of time that might be up to 24 hours, and do full gate duty for you while you capture the last SAP?

Instead of just running maintenance on your outpost and capturing them yourself once in awhile to maintain maximum benefits?

You never know when the SAPs are going to spawn, according to this. I'm not waiting around for 24 hours after it hits 0% hoping to get it the very next time. I'd rather keep my outpost at full blast and full benefits all along.

Well gee, Syndic, pardon us if we think that CIR's reasons for wanting to get another Wiki running might just be motivated by something than the higher ideal you claim to have and are often mocked for your failure to uphold. Gasp.

The wiki is neutral. Your determination to ignore that is not our problem. Your inability to get Wikipedia to accept you is also not our problem. If you also lack the sufficient numbers of motivated people to start your own wiki and make it thrive, this, thirdly, continues to not be our problem.  One wonders why, in the last seven months of your sizable corporation, you never had an interest in this venture before, or why you chose to do so now. Hmmm... roll

Create what you want, duplicate what you want, do what you want. We think having multiple wikis instead of one collaborative effort when there's been no demonstrated problem with the original is shortsighted and self-serving (it's not hard to create a backup, after all), but then again, we think a lot of what CIR does in and out of game falls excellently under that label, so why should this be any different?

Our wiki is intended to be a resource for people who play the game, not an advertisement on Wikipedia. That's the bottom line and the only thing we care about, and that's where our interest ends. If you take the material and try to do something else with it, have at it. Either way, not our problem. Have a day.

*makes a note to update the weapon section of the wiki, just as soon as he actually has time*

Part of the problem is that Wiki was written by newer players doing their best to absorb knowledge as fast as they could - we have amazingly little support from veteran players, though I wouldn't surmise as to the reasons, because I'm sure they're different for each. I'm not sure who wrote that specific section, but yes, now that we're a bit more veteran, it might help for a slightly more even-handed approach to the weapon traits section.

The "no cap use, rangeset toggle by ammo choice," and "No LOS" is a pretty big deal. smile

Robbie's post is in no way reflective of the general consensus of FOOM, nor FOOM's wishes.

FOOM's issue with living on beta was actually not the PVP experience, no matter what certain egotisticals seem to think. We lived in far harsher climates in that other game for far longer and did just fine, thanks.

It's simply that the hassle factor wasn't worth the benefits at our EP level. It doesn't matter how good the pilots are - when it takes five or six of you to clear a roaming spawn of Superior Observers, because none of you can drive a heavy mech, and your normal mech pilots are mediocre in their bots, that's a hassle. When the roaming spawns cruise by every two hours, that's a significant pain in the ***. Lump in with that the distance from Laosura to any off-island teleport, and you either get to piss money into the breeze on teleporters (which have their own issues) or set up the longest friggin Sequer chain ever. (We're only now getting into the Lithus realm, and we're already seeing that they're insufficient, as well.)

What Robbie's talking about is his own thing. We learned a lot from the beta experience - which was all we were really ever after; to find out WTF goes on out there and what we'd need to make a proper go of it. We were frankly pretty amazed someone didn't just come by and take the place, but the reason no one did, we know now, is ultimately the same reason there are so many vacant outposts and islands: it's just not worth the hassle. You either have to have stupid numbers of player (at least at our EP, though I suspect that only mitigates slightly over time) or you have to have an immense amount of tolerance for hassle, and we have neither. So we left. When, not if, we return to beta, we'll come back quite ready for it, but the Laosura Experiment (that was our in-house name for it from day one) was pretty much completed when we got to see how the intrusion protection system worked last week.

(Seriously? You don't even get a notification mail when someone registers to take your outpost? And they don't get one when you throw the protection card down? Seriously?)

Anyhow. My own opinion of things is that I think the newer entities ought to get together on an Alpha-2 (they have more interesting terrain, IMO) and all show up in lights/assaults, flag themselves, and have a lovely battle royale once a week or so, and then talk about what they learned with each other afterwards. If someone else shows up and flags in something bigger, the two scrimmage-sides put their differences aside and go for the third party until that's resolved. If a large third party shows, we leave the area utilizing speed and terrain until our flags wear off.

Random multi-topic post ended.

Wait... what... your logs show *something* ?!?!? tongue

Believe it or not, their logs show something almost all the time. Sometimes they show someone being a huckster and trying to fake a loss, but rather often, when the logs show a legitimate discon/lag loss, the logs DO show it - and they make good on it. Not always, but surprisingly often.

It's almost like... in that other game... they're LYING to you about the logs.

You find any censorship there, you let me know. The wiki is open to anyone to edit, and the logs would clearly show if someone started screwing around with it, and the logs are also open to view.

More knowledge base is good, though, so I don't mind seeing another one spring up. Anyone who plays Perp is an involved party, btw - and if you think Wikipedia doesn't have censorship and manipulation, I have an oil derrick in New York City for you. wink

Ninja edit: FWIW, we deliberately included a section for corps to describe themselves as a way to hopefully encourage others to get in there and edit. We really wouldn't mind other hands in the mix. There's a lot of game here for one corp to document, and we surely don't know all of it.

Gutpunch is my new artifact overlord.

A thoroughly enjoyable and well-moderated experience. I hope the dev team takes the discourse to heart; I think some very reasonable positions were established.

Madame, if 12 people are considered a zerg, this game is in a sad, sad way indeed.

FOOM is full of people like me - we do enough industry to supply us with things to make and go boom. Then we go looking for people to shoot. Being primarily North American and ranging across the continent, our ops tend to begin around 02-03:00, give/take. We've done this on three occasions, now, and discovered exactly the same problem all three times:

No targets. These islands are a tomb at this time of day. You have to - quite literally - arrange a fight in order to get any targets at all, and arranging a fight when you're the new guys has a bad habit of getting you impressively dead. (Not that this stops us... it's just frustrating.)

This isn't a "Oh god we got spanked" nor a "We think you cheated" or even a "Game is unbalancedzor!"

It's a "No one else is here to play the game with us."

...and that's a pretty damn serious problem, folks. We do NOT want to quit, because we really like the game, but we didn't come here to build pretty bots and throw them them at NPCs all day.

Discuss. sad
